I'm interested in what you cover your books with. Most of my books are made hard-bound with covered spines and basic codex stitching. I try to find interesting, sturdy fabrics to cover the board with. I've used fake leather, velvet, canvasy materials, and clippings from my curtains. One of my main obstacles is glueing the material to the board without having the glue seep through the fabric and make a messy, crusty edge on the inner rim of the book.
What do you cover your books with? What do you use to attatch those materials to your book?
And just for fun, my book work is here:

Even with this you'll still need your boards and clamps but it is a good product.
Your work is quite arresting. Thanks for sharing the link.

Re: Covering your book
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 10:39 AMto avoid the glue seeping through, try glueing the fabric only on the inside of the cover boards.
lay fabric flat, arrange cover and spin boards on it.
run a bead of glue (Poly Vinyl is my favorite) along the top inch of the boards.
fold the top flap over, clamp.
Do the same with the bottom edge.
There will now be little ears at either corner where the fabric is double thick.
Put a dab of glue inside each 'ear' on the corners
put a bead of glue on the cover board and fold over the end, clamp.
if you glue your end page down now (spread glue on the entire inside of your front cover board)
it will help hold the fabric in place.
clamp the end page and the fabric on that side, flip the book over and repeat on the back cover.
The result of this technique is that your fabric is not glued to the front of your cover baord and it can move freely.
This has advantages and disadvantages, but if you want a fabric cover, this is probably the easiest and best looking approach.
If you have trouble with the PVA glue and thicker, or fuzzy fabrics, try watering it down a little so it soaks in more, It will take much longer to dry if you use to much, but it will soak into the fabric and hold really well.
