Does anyone know of a good place to order waxed thread from? the stores in my area only sell leather working waxed thread, which is too heavily waxed for binding, and has only 4 colors.
thanks

Re: waxed thread
Sun, November 9, 2003 - 12:12 PMNope, but, if you take a lump of beeswax, and pull your thread through it, voila: waxed thread. That's what i do. Gives me more choice on thickness of thread, colour, consistency and all (well, any choice. there's nowhere near me that sells waxed bookbinding thread).

Re: waxed thread
Sun, November 9, 2003 - 7:04 PMi just recently got back into book binding. currently i am buying my supplies from a local source. not sure if the prices are good or not, but i can pick up the basics right away without having to wait for shipped items.
i buy 3ply waxed linen at the Paper Source. 45 yds for $5.00. is that good? don't know. they have more than 4 colors, which is nice. also, 5 ply.
if this works for you, check them out at www.paper-source.com .

Re: waxed thread
Mon, November 10, 2003 - 8:18 PMI haven't ordered from any of these places because shipping to Canada from the States is *expensive*; however, you may want to check out the following:
www.artpaper.com/booksupply.html
nt.bnt.com/talas/menu.html (note: this one is unwaxed; they have waxed thread as well)
www.johnnealbooks.com/cgi-loc...ing.html
I'm still looking for a Canadian distributor. I'm planning a trip down to New York in December in part to pick up some binding thread. :/

Re: waxed thread
Wed, November 12, 2003 - 7:54 AMThe best place (and cheapest) that I've found is Royalwood -- a basketmaking supply company. I believe that that's where Volcano Book Arts gets their thread. They have many many colors, and many 'ply' to choose from (I like the 4-ply). Thread comes in 100-yd spools (that's A LOT) -- if you spend more than $50, it's $6.80/spool for the 4-ply (use this link: www.royalwoodltd.com/cat14-17aw.htm)... if you want to spend less than $50, you can use their retail page and it's $8.95 (this link: www.royalwoodltd.com/cat14-17ar.htm)
Shipping is reasonable, and pretty quick. They are out of Ohio. I don't know if they ship to Canada.

Thank you so much for posting Royalwood's site; I was utterly amazed to discover they're only 45 mins. from my home! I bookmarked the site and will definately have to check them out next trip to Mansfield I make. TFS!

Wed, November 12, 2003 - 9:32 AMWow, thank you so much for all your help. I've never been satisfied with waxing thread myself, but i don't have any good reason for why that is. I'll definately check out all the sights you all listed. Thanks again -

Re: waxed thread
Fri, November 14, 2003 - 7:39 PMA bunch of other bookmakers that i work with and i split a ton of colors from Royalwood this summer. I have about 12 different 4-ply colors from them. I have been very happy with the waxed linen and they were very sweet on the phone.
