I figured there should be a thread for posing queries about our processes. Binding blunders, cover critiques, paper ponderances
(gee, that was fun!)
Anything you seem to be struggling with, drop a line and I'm sure someone will bite!

Re: what next?
Tue, September 23, 2003 - 9:11 PMWell I'm currently working on nervous journals, I stuffed up with the page layout and only realised after i've done like six of the little buggers, it's a pretty small error and i don't think anyone but me will notice so I'm going to send them off to daisy anyway. My biggest problem has been keeping my coptic stitch tight. anyone got any tips? -

Re: what next?
Tue, September 23, 2003 - 11:07 PMHmmm I don't know if this can be useful (given that moisture and paper don't mix well), but in my camps we used to wet thread before using it, so that it tightened as it dried. Maybe you can try -- if it's not dripping wet it should spare the paper.

Re: what next?
Tue, September 23, 2003 - 11:37 PMYou using waxed thread? Beeswax helps it slide through paper more smoothly, but also helps it bind better to itself, holding knots in place, with less tendency to slacken. I've heard of people wetting the thread, too, but mostly for the ends being threaded into wood boards. I'd be a little worried about it tightening too much as it dried, and cupping the spine, but I've never tried it outside the wood attachments. -

Re: what next?
Tue, September 23, 2003 - 11:39 PMoh! and with coptic stitch, you can notch the spine folds rather than just piercing them - cut little tiny wedges out of the fold, and the knots will seat in, look cool (and more ancient-fashion), and be held more solidly while you work. -

I know nothing about binding. I am THAT much of a doof. *sighs* I just use a needle and pierce the center pages, and sweep ( and stab!) the thread to each side of the covers.
Very crude. At least, compared to all y'all. -

Re: what next?
Wed, September 24, 2003 - 3:18 AMI love the idea of the notched spine as well!
I think I had misunderstood what coptic binding is, though. Does either of you have a picture of a coptic binding you did where I can see the spine close-up?
