So I've decided to take some initiative and see if anyone here would be willing to take part in an exchange of book arts projects. I'm thinking that perhaps we coudl get a group of 5-10 people together, come up with a theme, and then do books that speak to that theme. WE coudl either do things that coudl be editioned so that everyone coudl have a copy of each person's work-- or we could just make one-of-a-kinds and send them away to another member.
The particulars are unimportant. If you'd be interested, reply to this thread and give any thoughts. Perhaps we can better develop a project based on how many people there would be.

Tue, April 27, 2004 - 3:28 PMWell, I'm not really sure what I'd want. But We've got 140+ members-- it would be great to see out little community spawn some new work. If not an exchange, maybe we could decide on a theme and then ask members to create something and post photos?

Re: Book Exchange
Tue, April 27, 2004 - 5:33 PMi would love to do a book exchange, i am in the process of doing two right now. though i have to admit that i am a sort of non-treadtional book binder, in that, i dont do the beautiful curved spine or leather work i have seen so many people here talk about.
i do pamphlets, accordions, stab binds, and coptic stitch, and any thing else i can turn into a book concept, like things in jars or boxes ect, books that are loose leaf with plastic toys for illustrations, books with street cleaner blades sewn into them, and books that have been made solely for the purpose of being mailed.
example 1: the book portfolio im working on right now (the first one) i am doing an edition of 14, 1 page, for an accordion book that will link each participants pages together with the theme of green, and carmina burana (we were each assign 2 peices of music from it to work from), it, of course, has a fold down size restriction so that the pages can be linked together.
example 2: the other exchange i am working on is an edition of 12, and the theme is childhood. the only restriction is that the book must be packaged in a jar, and labeled.
i have done many many other books, but i have often got the impression that people in this tribe do more traditional bindings, and i might be a little too content obsessed or whimsical . . . or something like that. i am a printmaker by nature, so i am a FIRM believer in edtioning.
anyhow, if you think i would fit into a book exchange, i would love to participate, though ill be gone almost all summer, so i dont know if time will allow it, depending on when the deadline is. but i would fully understand if this was something reaching for a more polished and traditional exchange.
i think thats all. -

Re: Book Exchange
Sun, May 2, 2004 - 2:08 PMWell, I don't think there would be any problem with non-traditional binidng techniques. The defintieion of "bool" is up to definition by the artist. Your work sounds very interesting-- I'd love to see some photos!
I realyl do like the idea of editioning. That way every person who participates will have each one of the submissions. Its a great way to accumulate a collection of book arts-- and a great opportunity to examine eachothers work.
Well, we've got 3 people so far-- anyone else? please? ;) -
