hi there. i just found this group. im new at making handmade books and could use inspiration/advice/instructions =) all i've made have been regular long-stitch journals with soft covers. But I've recently tried my hand at coptic binding.
I used illustration board for the cover, which i covered with handmade paper. I attached a piece of elastic to the back cover which could go over the entire book to keep it closed.
The book looks ok, I think, but when you open it, there are gaps between the signatures. Is this normal? How do I keep this from happening the next time I make a coptic journal?
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Re: im a newbie | coptic journals
Fri, February 4, 2005 - 4:27 AMI have made a few books, years ago. I don't know what they're called - I had a quick one-class demo in a fibers course I took at university. I went home and made 2-3 more as practice. They look like regular bound books with the sewn signatures glued to the spine.
Since, though, I've looked online at different methods, and tried a few things. I will put a pic in my profile album of a little beaded spine book I made last winter. I'll take pix of the 2 books I made in uni when the demo was still fresh in my mind, later today and put those in as well. -

Fri, February 4, 2005 - 5:44 PMHi Tracey, the beaded spine book looks really nice. =) Will check your album for the pics of your other books later.
Question, what did you use for the cover paper of your book? Do you think regular gift-wrapping paper will work ok?
I've only used handmade paper for my first few attempts. -

Re: im a newbie | coptic journals
Sun, February 6, 2005 - 6:42 PMThanks! The music note paper I used on the book was from a dollar store - it came in large-ish square sheets, maybe 11" square? I saw them with the stationary stuff in a dollar-type store for $1/2 sheets. It's thin like giftwrap, but not really shiny. It reminds me of the specialty printed paper you can buy at the art store for collage/scrapbooking.
I use all kinds of paper - I flatten gift wrap, keep candy bar foil, hoard bits of everything - you name it. I'm going to make some paper this week or next - it's been years since I've done it. So long, in fact, than I must have given away or lost my mould and deckle somewhere along the way. But I have 2 silkscreen screens I made in university that have managed to stay with me - I'm going to try one of those since I don't silkscreen any more. -

Sun, February 6, 2005 - 6:44 PMOh, and I WILL take pix of those other books I made long ago and post them in my album. I've been sick for a few days, but I'm feeling better now. -

Re: im a newbie | coptic journals
Mon, February 21, 2005 - 10:25 PMI put some new pictures in my album. There's a book bound with silk cord and a paintbrush that I made a few weeks ago. The pages are cartridge paper and the covers are brown postalwrap that I bunched up and soaked in water, then fingerpainted with sparkly paint. I cut it into 4 pieces and glued them back-to-back to make a sturdier pair of covers. I also glued the folded pages along the edges at the spine for more stability.
The little white book was one I made right after I had that quick bookbinding class in uni. I used it to record my formulas and samples each time I tried a new dye-bath in my Fibres course. -

Re: im a newbie | coptic journals
Wed, February 23, 2005 - 12:49 AMgreat books! i love the effect of using cartridge paper, with the holes strip still attached.
your brown postalwrap cover is also cool --- i should try putting more effort in my covers. i usually cop out and just settle for plain handmade paper (which i don't even make myself).
thanks for sharing!

Re: im a newbie | coptic journals
Sun, January 30, 2005 - 8:11 AMHi ulan25!
Your coptic journals look great ... my favourite binding :)
The gaps between the signatures are just right. The beauty of this binding lies partly in the fact that all pages lie flat, making it easier to write in. I use coptic books for all my journalling, calligraphy and bookbinding notes.
Keep up the good work!

Re: im a newbie | coptic journals
Mon, January 31, 2005 - 8:39 AMHi Lesley! Thanks for your reply. Whew! I'm so relieved that gaps are ok. I've been wondering what I've been doing wrong hehehe.
I've gone mad about coptic binding and I just made another one (for another friend) mwahahaha. I can't wait to use the journal I made for myself (the 2nd one -- yellow-orange).
Hope to learn more types of binding, although it appears that coptic will be my favorite one for journals for a long time.
Thanks again! -

Re: im a newbie | coptic journals
Tue, February 1, 2005 - 7:36 AMLucky friend indeed!
It's only recently that I've plucked the courage to actually write in my coptic books - was worried that I might make a 'mistake'!!
I know just what you mean about going mad on coptic bindings - they are very addictive! How many needles do you use? I first learned the one-needle method, then discovered the two-needle which became my favourite for a while. Now I can't make my mind up!! -

Re: im a newbie | coptic journals
Wed, February 2, 2005 - 8:36 AMWhaa... there's such a thing as multi-needle coptic? I gotta look that up LOL! I just use one needle. But now that you've mentioned that there's a 2-needle way, I think I know what I'll be doing tomorrow hee hee...
I made another one, my fourth in less than a week. A friend of mine 'ordered' one for his girlfriend haha -- he specified a sun motif.
I've put them all in my Yahoo! online album if you'd like a look:

Uhm, can I see your books too? =) How does a 2-needle coptic look? =) -

Thu, February 3, 2005 - 3:16 PMUlan25,
I've logged in to Yahoo and I don't know where to go to find your online album. Can you re-send the link? Or tell me where I've missed something?
In my photos at Tribe there are a couple of photos of one of my journals that was done with 2 needles. It's my favorite method...

Fri, February 4, 2005 - 5:36 PMHi Khajha! I looked at the url I posted and felt so silly haha. I linked to just the home page of yahoo photos!
My album is at photos.yahoo.com/ulan25 =)
Or try this link as well: pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/ulan25/album
I saw your 2-needle coptic, and it looks really nice! I love that you included a pull-out page. What's the size of that one?
The ones I've made are all 4 1/2 x 6 inches. Really small books. =)
Thanks for sharing your work! Im excited to make more books.
